This band with Steve Leslie, singer-songwriter with familial roots in Houston, Texas, is from Washington, perhaps not most the rootsy area in North America. Their second CD succeeds at bringing a beautiful mix of smooth country rock with hopes of succeeding (?) the Byrds, the Link, Poco, the Eagles in their early days, and other illustrious groups we like just a little bit here in the Low Countries. It is a record that is definitely on the edge of becoming like one of those seventies bands, but in a very beautiful manner, without being too gritty.
Listen to "Pittsburgh" or "Eight Days" and you think of the rockin' work of the Byrds. There are plenty of references, however, to the more modern alt.country: Wilco, Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Kris Kehr, and other Texan music.
The band's rather unique name comes from a Scenic Highway in their area (http://www.chuckanutdrive.com), and if the music matches the highway, it's most fun to drive the road on a motorcycle.
Lots of dreamy songs carried by beautiful soundscapes, which lead a person to much better, more natural places. But there’s also lots of rockin’ and honky-tonkin’ (listen to "Little Did I Know" and "Any Way I Can") and we find that exciting too, let that be clear. On these moments they resemble the better Texan works and the musical gods know we do have a great love for that<./p>
The thirteen tracks are all of very high quality, not your everyday band. Especially the pedal steel and the harmonies provide a good basis for their lead guitarist to do his thing. In conclusion? I almost don't want to say, out of fear of spoiling them and of my own anti-materialism, but nevertheless: BUY THIS CD AND ENJOY SPRING!

Deze band met Steve Leslie, een singer-songwriter met zijn familiale wortels in Houston, Texas, heeft als uitvalsbasis Washington, misschien niet de meest rootsy plaats in Noord-Amerika. Toch slagen ze er in op hun tweede cd een mooie mix te brengen van vlotte countryrock met hopen knipoogjes naar The Byrds, The Band, Poco, The Eagles (beginfase) en andere illustere groepen die we een beetje vanuit ons bekkengebied aanbidden. Het is zeker een plaatje geworden dat de sfeer van de seventies oproept, maar dan wel op een heel mooie manier, zonder melig te worden… Luister naar Pittsburg of Eight Days en je denkt op onuitgegeven werk van de Byrds gestoten te zijn. Er zijn echter ook voldoende verwijzingen naar de modernere alt.country als daar zijn: Wilco, Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Kris Kehr… en een hele rits Texan music. Hun vrij originele naam is ontleend aan een Scenic Highway in hun buurt (http://www.chuckanutdrive.com) en indien de referenties kloppen met de geleverde muziek wil ik daar best eens van gaan genieten op mijn gemotoriseerde tweewieler. Veel dromerige songs dus, die, gedragen door het prachtige geluidslandschap, een mens zonder moeite naar betere, lees meer natuurlijke oorden voeren. Geregeld wordt er echter ook stevig gerockt en 'gehonkytonkt' (luister naar o.a. Little Did I Know, Any Way I Can) en dat vinden wij ook uiterst opwindend, laat dat duidelijk zijn. Op die momenten komen ze dicht in de buurt van het betere Texaanse werk, en de muziekgoden weten dat we daarvoor minstens één grote boon in onze zak hebben zitten. Dertien nummers en allen van een zeer hoog gehalte, het is niet alledaags. Vooral de pedal steel en de meerstemmige zang zorgen meestal voor een uiterst goed in het gehoor liggend en aangenaam fundament waarop vooral hun onderlegde lead gitarist dan geregeld zijn ding mag doen. Uiteindelijk besluit? Ik durf het bijna niet uitschreeuwen, uit angst om hier ten huize de prachtige sfeer om zeep te helpen alsook mijn antimaterialistisch grondprincipe met de voeten te treden, maar ik ga het toch doen: KOOP DEZE CD EN GENIET VAN DE LENTE!
