Chuckanut Drive – Fidelity Grange by Boris Budd
Sometimes I become a bit apprehensive when having to review a country record. I’m not really much of a buff of the genre. Anywho, I got out my stirrups and 10 gallon hat, then threw on Fidelity Grange from Chuckanut Drive. I was immediately struck by how good the record sounded.
The mix is fabulous. It quickly became evident that Fidelity Grange was so much more than a typical record. Loaded with cool, introspective songs the record reminded me a little of that Alex Chilton, Big Star, Memphis thing at times. The band didn’t include a song list with the record so I can’t list examples, but some of the arrangements are killer.
Excellent, oftentimes haunting, guitar work abounds, tied together by tight rhythm section work. I especially liked the lead vocals laid back style and smooth delivery. It worked very well with the great back up singing present throughout.
This band is next playing in town at the Wild Buffalo on July 25. Get this record. It’ll make you shout, “I like both kinds of music, country and western!
